Our School
SCHOOL BACKGROUNDFounded in 1921, New Dorp High School is a comprehensive, four-year public high school. New Dorp is located on Staten Island, a residential borough of New York City. A neighborhood high school, we attract students who reside within its zoned boundaries. ENROLLMENT Student enrollment is approximately 2500, with a senior class of approximately 360 students. New Dorp students represent a variety of racial, ethnic and economic groups who interact in an atmosphere of cooperation. This diverse population consists of 5% Asian/Pacific Islander; 20% Black (non-Hispanic); 15% Hispanic; 60% White (non-Hispanic). FACULTY New Dorp has a full time faculty of 165 teachers. The vast majority hold advanced degrees. Many serve as instructors at local colleges. POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION The percentage of 2004 graduates who attend post-secondary education are as follows: 4 year institutions: 82% 2 year institutions: 13% Military: 2% Work: 2% Vocational Programs: 1% GRADING SYSTEM Grades are issued in increments of 5 for grades of 65 - 90 and in increments of 1 for 90 and above. The grade point average (G.P.A.) is weighted. GRADING CHART
Rank and grade point average are reported on the transcript. Rank is computed at the end of six semesters on the basis of all subjects, excluding physical education. The rank is based on the students weighted GPA. All Advanced Placement courses are weighted at 1.1%. All Honors courses are weighted at 1.05%. The college admission average (CAA) is computed by using the grades in the traditional academic majors only (English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science and Foreign Language). SCHOLARSHIP AWARD MONEY For the academic year 2003-2004, New Dorp graduates earned over 3 million dollars in Scholarships. SPECIAL FEATURES Advanced Placement courses are offered in: Art Biology Calculus English Literature European History U.S. History and Government College Extension: Anatomy & Physiology, Physics, Spanish, Italian New Dorp offers programs in partnership with St. John's University, Polytechnic University, CUNY � College of Staten Island and Kingsborough Community College. All students are enrolled in one of the following four-year House Programs: The College Now Program The Corporate Center The Future Teachers Academy The Honors Institute The Institute for American & Legal Studies The Institute of Mathematics & Science The International House The Liberal Arts Program Instructional Support Services Academy Specialized Programs: Institute of Mathematics & Science: Our most rigorous program, designed to prepare students for prestigious colleges and expose them to careers in Science, Mathematics, Computers and English. The Honors Institute: A rigorous program requiring all students to complete Honors and Advanced Placement courses to achieve an Advanced Regents Diploma. The Institute for American & Legal Studies: Requires students to take special courses in American History in addition to the required four years of Social Studies. SCHOOL TO CAREER Virtual Enterprise is a simulated business that is set up and run by students to prepare them for working in a real business environment.
